Exposing an Invisible Killer
- Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless and tasteless dangerous toxic gas.
- Carbon Monoxide is created as a by-product of incomplete combustion. Poisoning and illness may occur when fossil fuels are burned without proper ventilation in close proximity to people.
- When CO enters bloodstream it disrupts the transportation of oxygen throughout the body and causes asphyxiation. The elderly, young children and individuals with pre-existing cardiac and lung conditions are the most susceptible to CO poisoning.
- The severity of illness caused by CO exposure depends upon a combination of the individual’s physical status and age, pre-existing health conditions, and the duration of exposure and carbon monoxide concentration in the air.
